A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he attested for regular service on 9 March 1885, aged 19 years. With them he served in India, March 1886-November 1892. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1892, he was recalled to the Colours in January 1900. With the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, March 1900-April 1902, being slightly wounded in action at Slabberts Nek on 23 July 1900.
