He was \u003cb\u003ewounded in July 1916\u003c\/b\u003e, suffering a bullet wound to the foot, and was evacuated to England for treatment before returning to his battalion in France in early 1917. The Australian War Memorial records him as \u003cb\u003ePrivate G. H. Hatton, service number 3352, 11th Australian Infantry Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e, with a recommendation for the \u003cb\u003eMilitary Medal\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eHis Military Medal was awarded for bravery at the \u003cb\u003eHindenburg Line near Bullecourt, France, on 5–6 May 1917\u003c\/b\u003e. During three enemy counterattacks, Hatton carried messages from the front line to Battalion Headquarters under heavy shell fire, volunteered for repeated journeys, and assisted stretcher-bearers in carrying out the wounded.
