He joined the \u003cb\u003e3rd Reinforcements, 11th Battalion, A.I.F.\u003c\/b\u003e, and embarked for overseas service on 26 April 1915.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-font-kerning: 0pt; mso-ligatures: none;\"\u003eMcDonald reached Gallipoli and was taken on strength with the \u003cb\u003e11th Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e on 16 June 1915. invalided to England in August 1915.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eAfter recovering, McDonald rejoined the 11th Battalion in France on 30 July 1916 and was later attached to a Light Trench Mortar Battery. On \u003cb\u003e1 November 1916\u003c\/b\u003e, while serving on the Western Front, he was \u003cb\u003ewounded in action\u003c\/b\u003e, receiving a gunshot wound to the left thigh.
