He served with the B Sub-division of the City Imperial Volunteers Battery in South Africa during the Boer War. In 1911 he was living at his family residence, Udney Hall, Teddington, Middlesex and gave his occupation as Shipping Clerk. In 1929, he married Ivy Ann Lord, a Cruft’s winning breeder of Pekinese dogs.
