FAMILY GROUPING

Single: India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Persia (1^st Lieut. G. M. Duncan, Bombay Engrs.) with named card box of issue and Daguerreotype photo of recipient.

George Munro Duncan born 23^rd June 1831 son of Alexander Duncan Surgeon of the Bombay Medical Establishment. Whilst at Kensington Proprietary Grammar School he won the prize to enter into a military cadetship with the East India Company and enlisted on the 3^rd January 1849. George rose to the rank of 2^nd Captain in the Bombay Engineers within 10 years of service. Sadly, it was whilst serving in India on the 27^th November 1859, aged 27 that George died of disease.

Only 12 medals issued to the unit.

Single: Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Capt P. H. Dun, 33^rd Madras N. L.) with named card box of issue.

Major Percy Henderson Dun was born on September 17^th 1829, in India. Commissioned as Ensign on the 13^th December 1846. Employed on Field Service with the Kamp tee movable column in the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories and Rathore District from 15^th December 1857 to 30^th April 1858 and was present at an affair of Patanang Khonee Pajs. Finally serving as Commissioner in Nahore in 1859.  Married to Kathrine Eliza Jean Duncan (Brother of George Munro Duncan) and they had six children together. He died on March 3, 1898, in Sydney, Australia, at the age of 68

Single: British War Medal (53529 A=Cpl C. W. S. Dun. 55 Bn A.I.F.) 

Charles William Sutherland Dun educated at Sydney Grammar School before enlisting on 22^nd October 1917 into the 3rd NSW General Service Reinforcements for UK. Charles sailed 8^th May 1918 and joined the 55^th Battalion in France on the 14^th of November and served till demobilisation, Returning to Australia on the 25^th March 1919.

This Family grouping comes with too much original ephemera to mention it all including items to nurses and various other members of the family from NSW. A great “untouched” family archive with an early NSW history.

Australian Camel Corps

FAMILY GROUPING OF FATHER (CAMEL CORPS) AND SON (CHANGI POW)

GROUP 1: FOUR: 1914/15 star, British War and Victory Medal all correctly impressed to 1393 PTE R. WILLIAMS 32/BN AIF. Death plaque correctly named to ROBERT WILLIAMS

EMB: 18th November 1915 with the 32^nd Battalion.

Transferred to the Camel Corps on the 24^th January 1916. Previous occupation “Jockey”

It appears Private Williams was severely injured by a “Defective Cap” which caused a “Compound Fracture of Radius…B. W. Forearm” whilst on duty with the Camel Corps on the 15^th March 1916 at Assuit

He was further invalided to Australia to recover on the 24^th June 1916

Admitted to 8^th A.G. Hospital (Subiaco, Western Australia) 14th February 1917 “Delirium Tremens” and died a few days later. Cause of death stated as “Cerebro Spinal Meningitis”

Note: As his death was war related and as he was still serving this is a rare example of a soldier receiving a Death Plaque even though his died in Australia.

Liberated Changi POW's

GROUP 2: Four: 1939/45 Star, Pacific Star. War Medal and Australian Service Medal 1939/45 all medals correctly impressed to WX16956 R. S. WILLIAMS

Robert Sydenham Williams (known as “Thirsty Bob”) enlisted 8^th October 1941 and was taken on strength with the 2/4^th Machine Gun Battalion 30^th December 1941

Sailed for Singapore 16^th January 1942 and was attached to E Company 1 platoon of the Special Reserve Battalion (all Machine Gunners) under the command of Major Bert Saggers.

He was recovered at Changi Gaol Camp on the 4^th September 1945. Returning to Sydney from Singapore via Darwin on the Hospital Ship Oranje, then by train to Perth to 110 Military Hospital with Berri Berri (Malnutritian).

Discharged 4^th April 1946

Note: Major A. E. Saggers wrote the book “To Hell and Back” which may give further incite. Also comes with masonic medal dated 1938 to R. Williams

Family grouping of two brothers who tragically died in France

Admitted to hospital Gallipoli sick 9^th September 1915

Transferred to 4^th Light Mortar Battery 14^th August 1916

Died of injuries on the 31st August 1918 caused by a motor accident (fractured skull). This was whilst on active service behind the lines in France and he was taken to the 4^th Field Ambulance and then to the 53^rd Casualty Clearing Station where he died.

Captain Steeles WW2 record states that he was part of Eastern Command when he discharged after having been to the Pacific theatre of war.

A very important group to a soldier who rose through the ranks with the light horse in Gallipoli, recognised for his leadership and gallantry and then went on to serve overseas in WW2.

Complete with various silver pens, vesta, lighter and card case. All with initials or monogram.

Second group to the son of Captain Steele M.C.

Group of four 1939/45 Star, Pacific Star (late style period official engraved),War Medal 1939/45 and Australian Service Medal (officially impressed) to NX51099  R.B.Steele who served in the 2/6th Australian Armoured Regiment who with their tanks were involved in the actions at Buna and Sanananda.

He is noted on the roll of the Regimental book "The Vital Factor" which gives an excellent account of Australia's first tank action for WW2 in PNG making his group of 4 that much more interesting.

Complete with excellent photo, Discharge paper and one of his colour patches.

Family Grouping:

PAIR: British War and Victory Medal, both correctly impressed to 6846 A-CPL (PTE ON VICTORY MEDAL) R. J. WATSON 2 BN AIF

 EMB: 8^th November 1916

 WIA/KIA: Initially classed as wounded 6^th November 1917, then reported wounded/missing before he was finally reported Killed in Action after a court of inquiry into his death.

Private Harris from his battalion gave the following statement in reference to Cpl Watson’s death; “Watson was buried by shell at Passchendaele on the 6^th November with McDonald, Sutcliffe and Cox. I helped to dig them out and buried them behind the trench which was just in rear of village.”

 Confirming Private Harris’s statement to be true and correct, Cpl Watson’s body was exhumed at the first possible opportunity and he now rests in the Passchendaele New British Cemetery (six and half miles N. E. from Ypres).

 Also comes with a British War and Victory Medal (pair) correctly impressed to 181003 GNR J. W. S. WATSON R. A. Medal roll confirms this to be the full entitlement to John William Stewart Watson who is believed to be Robert’s brother. Further research required

In Australia, Alfred Leonard skip enlisted on the 6^th November 1940 and served as a sergeant on staff with Western Command (WA) for the whole period of the Second World War.

Note: With the service number WX284 we know that Sergeant Straughan enlisted on the very first day of enlistment in 1939. The “Western Mail” newspaper dated the 9^th January 1941 lists a “Virgilian Honour Roll” giving us an insight of his service and shows us he was still overseas at that time.  “Cocky's Offsider" WX284 Sgt G. I. Straughan, A/A Platoon, Headquarters Coy.. 2/11 Battalion. AIF. Abroad”

The “Mirror” newspaper dated 31^st October 1942 in relation to Georges wedding had stated the following; “George took everything Hitler’s men could throw at him overseas, and returned to claim his sweet heart. “(First WAAAF wedding in Geraldton)

With the newspaper clipping showing his marriage in Australia in 1942 and knowing the majority of the 2/11^th were taken Prisoners on Crete, it appears that Sergeant Straughan may have been one of the lucky few who were able to make a daring escape off the island. Further research can only enhance this group.

The Benghazi Handicap's Wooden Spooners.

Meet two of the 9th Division's luckiest men. QX1698 Sapper Stanley Curtis and QX2454 Sapper Edward Hetherington-Harford of the 2/7th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers enjoy a well received cigarette after their late arrival in Tobruk on foot after a 16 day trek.

Left behind in Benghazi to plant demolitions on Italian supply dumps so that the advancing Afrika Korps could not take advantage of them the two Sappers planted explosives to cover the 9th Divisions retreat, known as "the Benghazi Handicap". When surprised by the rapid approach of the advancing Afrika Korp the two men hid and were overtaken by Rommel's Panzer Divisions.

Finding themselves behind enemy lines and surrounded by thousands of Axis troops the men hid by day and travelled by night where possible overland on foot. After a journey of 16 days, and 300 miles (483 kilometres), the men managed to sneak past German positions surrounding Tobruk and return to their units. Immediately hospitalised for treatment of their injuries it is not known if the men played any further part in the Western Desert Campaign. If so I believe they well deserved any rest coming to them after that.

This is a known group purchased from the family with a unnamed Defence medal and seems to comply with the Clive Johnson statement that up to 700 Defence medals were despatched in haste to predominantly QX numbers
