A Butcher by occupation, living at 63 Lincoln Street, Richmond, he enlisted and served in 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles from January 1901. In the Great War he enlisted into the 10th Light Horse and was subsequently discharged and joined the 11th Battalion AIF
