Note: Private Wilson was a member of 140th (Fincastle's Horse) Company. This was part of the second contingent who saw action late in the war against the "Bitter Enders", the Boers who had elected to fight on. Fincastle’s Horse was used as mounted infantry for reconnaissance work, very mobile, fast scouting units and capable of fighting alongside regular army when required.

Note: Farrier Sergeant Edward Arthur Drew’s medal roll shows only the entitlement of the Transvaal clasp. The Relief of Mafeking clasp is an original and appears to have been fitted a long time ago by a jeweller. As Farrier Sergeant Drew was in country at the time of the relief of Mafeking and as the Imperial Yeomanry was part of the body of troops in the column, it is possible he believed he was entitled to the clasp. The medal comes with a copy of his service record stating that he is a Veterinary Surgeon by trade and also states he enlisted in the New Zealand Mounted Armed Constabulary prior to 1881. As a prominent Veterinary Surgeon in the community and along with his previous service in the Constabulary it would be unlikely that he would have been challenged on his clasp entitlement post war.
It would be interesting to see if with good research it could be established exactly what he was doing during the Relief of Mafeking and if in fact he was deserving of the clasp.

Britishbattles.com has the following to say about the 13th Battery at Ladysmith “The withdrawal was in considerable confusion which became worse as the troops streamed down the hillside. The dire situation was retrieved by the steadiness of the two RFA batteries, the 13th and the 53rd, conducting a fighting withdrawal to cover the infantry, interposing themselves between the infantry and the Boers, moving and firing in turn……..White’s army was saved from much greater disaster by the steadfastness of the Royal Field Artillery 53rd and 13th batteries.”
Note: Medal roll states he was Invalided on the 5th July 1900.

John Awdry Dobree was born in Lee, Kent in 1877, the son of Edward Henry Dobree, a Shipping Agent, and joined the Honourable Artillery Company in 1897. He served with the B Sub-division of the City Imperial Volunteers Battery in South Africa during the Boer War. In 1911 he was living at his family residence, Udney Hall, Teddington, Middlesex and gave his occupation as Shipping Clerk. In 1929, he married Ivy Ann Lord, a Cruft’s winning breeder of Pekinese dogs. He died in 1937.

Roland Jamieson was born in Islington in 1880. A pen maker by occupation, he joined the 3rd City of London Rifle Volunteers in 1896 and served in the Infantry Battalion. He died in Finsbury Park in 1910 note inverted ‘m’ in name.

Robert John Vannan, a station clerk from Totara, Waitaki, attested for the 5th N.Z. Contingent and was embarked in the S.S. Gymeric in March 1900. A member of No. 15 Company, he served in Rhodesia, in addition to other operations, and was discharged in March 1903, following which he returned to his mother’s residence in Kelvinside, Glasgow.
