Single : QUEENS SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899 Three clasps "CC, T, S.A.02" impressed 1213 ................. AUS: COM: H.

The service number and Commonwealth Horse stamping (both impressed) is very clear. As there is only one soldier in the Commonwealth Horse with that number, it can only be Pte Walter Arnott Brooke from Tasmania.

On close examination you can see the surname Brooke under magnifying glass. A good chance to buy a rare Tasmanian QSA at a fraction of the cost.

The following jewelers clasps are attached (in order as they appear)

"Cape Colony, Natal, Rhodesia, Relief of Mafeking, Defence of Kimberley, Talana, Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith, Belmont, Modder River, Tugela Heights, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeburg, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Driefontein, Wepener, Defence of Mafeking, Transvaal, Johannesburg, Laings Nek, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen, Belfast, 1899 1900-1-2"

There are a total of 25 clasps with the last clasp "1899 1900-1-2" covering what would normally be "South Africa 1901" & "South Africa 1902" otherwise all official clasps are represented.

It is our belief that this would have been a museum type show piece of which Private Arnolds original medal was built upon. The Jewelers clasps are beautifully made and have that "old world" feel about them and there is no doubt that this was done a long time ago.

This would make a great show piece in any Boer War collectors display.

FIRST INTO MAFEKING

Pair: British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97 , reverse undated, 1 clasp, Mashonaland 1890 (Tpr. G. Seymour. B.S.A.C.P.) & Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902 , 4 clasps, Relief of Mafeking, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal (570 Sjt: G. Seymour. Imp: Lt. Horse)

George Seymour attested for the British South Africa Company Police on 4 March 1890, being assigned the regimental number ‘399’. He served in “E” Troop in the Pioneer Column of 1890, and was discharged on 25 November 1891.

When war broke out again and as an experienced soldier, George found his way into the elite group under the control of Major Karri-Davies in the Imperial Light Horse . Instrumental in the relief of Ladysmith where they disabled two Boer "Long Tom" artillery guns on Gun Hill, and when challenged by a Boer picket, Major Davies bellowed the command "Fix bayonets and charge the buggers" (The Boer War, Thomas Pakenham, pg 271), It was not long after Sergeant Seymour volunteered and went on with seven others to personally relieve (break) the siege of Mafeking with a gallant charge into the town alongside their fearless leader Major Karri-Davies, thus ending the siege after 217 days. The picture above is in relation to a silver salver than was presented to all nine men for their heroics.

BSA Medal and clasp is confirmed in the roll by Colin Owen. Only 112 medals were issued to the British South Africa Company's Police for Mashonaland 1890, including 73 with this single clasp.

QSA confirmed on medal roll with only 209 medals issued with Relief of Mafeking and Relief of Ladysmith clasps.

Note: Major Karri Davies (West Australian), who was a personal friend of Cecil Rhodes, took part in the Jameson Raid. He was captured by Kruger's forces, and sentenced to imprisonment for two years. He and Major Woolls-Sampson were the last two imprisoned and refused to admit defeat. When the Boer War broke out Major Karri Davies and Major Woolls-Sampson recruited the Imperial Light Horse, 500 strong, and for this body they provided the entire equipment at their own expense. Colonel Davies went through the siege of Ladysmith, and it was during the siege that he received the severe wounds from which he never completely recovered. Karri-Davies was the first to enter Mafeking when the siege of that city was raised and it was acknowledged that he refused a VC and have his CB removed from the London Gazette as "he does not fight for medals but for his Queen". A truly amazing man.

Served with Colonial Scouts 22.12.99- 5.11.00

Bethune’s Mounted Infantry (number 950) 7.11.00-15.12.00

Menne’s Scouts (number 28) 16.12.00 – 3.12.01

Scottish Horse (number 36976) 10.1.02-31.5.02

Note: Medal roll confirms Jens Henrich Schumens service but his name is continuously misspelt and he appears as many variations “Gens, Jas, Jos, James and Schuman, Schumman, Schummen” and it is for this reason we can see why he has clearly erased his surname off the medals and the first initial is altered to a J on his KSA. Luckily his service number and all other details have been left alone and the medal rolls link and confirm his group. Outstanding service.

Single: QUEENS SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899 two clasps "Relief of Mafeking & T" correctly impressed to 5108 FAR: SGT E. A DREW 8TH COY 4TH IMP: YEO:

Note: Farrier Sergeant Edward Arthur Drew’s medal roll shows only the entitlement of the Transvaal clasp. The Relief of Mafeking clasp is an original and appears to have been fitted a long time ago by a jeweller.  As Farrier Sergeant Drew was in country at the time of the relief of Mafeking and as the Imperial Yeomanry was part of the body of troops in the column, it is possible he believed he was entitled to the clasp. The medal comes with a copy of his service record stating that he is a Veterinary Surgeon by trade and also states he enlisted in the New Zealand Mounted Armed Constabulary prior to 1881. As a prominent Veterinary Surgeon in the community and along with his previous service in the Constabulary it would be unlikely that he would have been challenged on his clasp entitlement post war.

It would be interesting to see if with good research it could be established exactly what he was doing during the Relief of Mafeking and if in fact he was deserving of the clasp.

Apart from period clasp alterations mentioned the medal is SOLD
