It is understood thar R. Seal participated the the famous Cavalry charge at Villeselve in March 1918 and was a good pal of Captain A. B. P.L. Vincent MC & Bar who was decorated for his roll in that charge and who’s medals were sold in our last list. Researching gallantry awards to the 3^rd Dragoon Guards indicates very little has ever been sold relating to such an amazing feat of arms which must go down as one of the last horse back chargers on the western front in WW1. Extremley rare.

Early Vietnam 1966 KIA Valour Grouping to James Mitchell Cornett

No 25367148 Private First Class James Mitchell Cornett was born on May 10, 1943, and was originally from Elizabethton, Tennessee. He served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Army, as an Infantryman in Alpha Company 1^st Battalion, 26^th Infantry, 1^st Infantry Division, His tour began on September 25, 1965. Nearly 6 months later, on March 24, 1966, PFC Cornett was killed under hostile conditions in Binh Duong province, South Vietnam; he was 22 years old at the time of his death. PFC Cornett is memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 6E, Line 46

The grouping consists of the following;

Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Vietnam campaign medals, name tag and Infantry Combat badge.

Official Award Documents for both Bronze Star and his Purple Heart in official padded booklet.

Various original cloth patches including Airborne patches (One article states that he transferred to the 173^rd Airborne”

Military I.D. and many original photographs in Vietnam

Basic training book from 1962

1965 original Discharge paper where he transferred to the reserves.

Numerous newspaper clippings including one of his parents receiving the Bronze Star.

Over 50 letters to him from family and several from him to them where he describes “loosing men like they are going out of style” along with killing two V.C.

Single: Sutlej Medal for Aliwal 1846 with clasp “Sobraon”. Correct period naming to CHAS ROBERTS 16^TH LANCERS.

Charles Roberts enlisted 13^th January 1825 in Reading, Sussex to the 59^th Foot (also shown as 52^nd), Regimental number 1638 at the age of 15 year and 2 months

Volunteered on the 18^th December 1828 to serve with the 16^th Dragoons

Transferred to the 3^rd Light Dragoons 1^st April 1846 30^th September 1848

Medically discharged unfit in 1848 at 43 years of age due to injuries sustained whilst in the saddle having served a total of 22 years and 11 months including the campaign in Afghanistan in 1838-39 at the assault and capture of Ghuznee, the action at Maharajpoor in 1843 and Aliwal and Sobraon in 1846. Comes with service docs.

 The 16^th Lancers were made famous for their charge at Aliwal completely routing the Sikh squares something the French were unable to do against the British Squares at Waterloo

Mathew Watters is remembered on the Helles Memorial

Trio: 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory medal correctly impressed to 7310 PTE M. WATTERS R. SC: FUS: Watters is incorrectly spelt with one "T" on BWM & VM which is how it is spelt on the British War and Victory Medal roll of the Royal Scots Fusiliers (copy included).

Mathew Watters was tragically killed whilst "A" Coy (1/5th R.S.F) re-occupied their trench line on the peninsular during heavy fighting on the 12th July 1915. The battalion diary states that the total casualties of the Battalion in the two days were as follows, KILLED; 6 Officers. 61 men. WOUNDED; 1 Officer, 139 men, MISSING; 8 men. (Copy included)

"Information was received by Mr and Mrs H. Watters 164 Rankinston on the 9th inst. That their son, L/CPL Mathew Watters 7310 "A" Coy 1/5th R.S.F. has been killed in action on the 12th July in the Dardanelles. Young Mr Watters who was a miner to trade, joined in August of last year and left with the battalion in May for the Dardanelles." Ayrshire Post 20th August 1915 (typed extract included)

HMS CANADA BATTLE OF JUTLAND GROUP

Group of three: 1914-15 Star (J.38629 T. POWELL ORD, R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (J.38629 T. POWELL A.B, R.N.)

Note: Thomas Powell was born in Leeds, York on the 2nd April 1885. During the Great War he served on the H.M.S. Victory, May-June 1915; H.M.S Excellent, June-Aug 1915; and H.M.S. Canada, from August 1915 during the battle of Jutland and until being demobbed in April of  1919. With copied service paper.

H.M.S Canada joined 4th Battle Squadron Grand Fleet in October 1915. Present at the Battle of Jutland 1916 Firing 42, 14inch rounds and managing to receive no damage during the battle.

The following is an extract from the history of the Royal Engineers (in reference to Sebastopol)

"Among those who were the most praised was private Andrew Fairservice. He is stated to have been exceedingly active in repairing embrasures under heavy fire, so much so, indeed, that his valour and perseverance gained him the honour of a Distinguished service medal and gratuity of five pounds."

Also as an extract from the London Gazette dated 19th May 1858 showing that Sapper Fairservice went on to serve in the Indian Mutiny where he was killed

878 Sapper Andrew Fairservice ..... "Died from the effects of a gunpowder explosion. The officer and men were at the time engaged in removing the powder from several carts of ammunition which were abandoned by the enemy while retreating before the column, and throwing into a well."

Records show (see illustration) that his Mutiny Medal was returned by his unit due to the fact that he was killed.  As this medal was not claimed, this group can not be classed as a broken group.

Close examination of the medals suggest both retain their original ribbon and could be classed as "sleepers". There is no doubt that these sappers did tremendous work at Sebastopol under horrendous conditions constantly exposing themselves to enemy fire.
