J.H.Mackness served in South Africa with Royal Engineers, Telegraph Battalion, 1st Division. His QSA clasp entitlement confirmed. After serving he was discharged to the Army Reserve.

Thomas Smith was born in Fareham, Hampshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Wiltshire Regiment on 8 April 1890, aged 20 years, 7 months. With them he served in India, October 1891-February 1898. Transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1898, he was recalled in December 1899 and served with the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment in South Africa, December 1899-August 1902. He was taken prisoner at Rensburg on 14 February 1900. With copied service papers.

Michael Lally was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1875 and attested for the Coldstream Guards there on 9 February 1897, having previously served in the 4th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. He served with the Guards in South Africa during the Boer War from 21 October 1899 until 23 December 1901, before transferring to the Army Reserve on 4 November 1902. He was discharged on 8 February 1909, after 12 years’ service.

On the outbreak of the Great War Lally re-enlisted into the York and Lancaster Regiment on 5 August 1914, and served with the 3rd Battalion in Gallipoli from 12 October 1915. He was evacuated to Egypt on 20 December 1915, arriving there on 3 February 1916.

Britishbattles.com has the following to say about the 13th Battery at Ladysmith “The withdrawal was in considerable confusion which became worse as the troops streamed down the hillside.  The dire situation was retrieved by the steadiness of the two RFA batteries, the 13th and the 53rd, conducting a fighting withdrawal to cover the infantry, interposing themselves between the infantry and the Boers, moving and firing in turn……..White’s army was saved from much greater disaster by the steadfastness of the Royal Field Artillery 53rd and 13th batteries.

 

Note: Medal roll states he was Invalided on the 5th July 1900.
