After a brief stint in the air force in 1933, Sgt Austin enlisted on the 16^th June 1940 with the King's Regiment. Sgt Austin's Special Service Brigade booklet for the Commando's shows he was taken on strength of the 2^nd Special Boat Squadron on the 17^th August 1943 and it was not until 1946 that Sgt Austin transferred to the reserves.
