PJ17 Single: Military Medal to 3352 Private George Henry Hatton, M.M.11th Battalion, A.I.F.
Hatton joined the 11th Battalion in France in June 1916 and was soon in action on the Western Front. He was wounded in July 1916, suffering a bullet wound to the foot, and was evacuated to England for treatment before returning to his battalion in France in early 1917. The Australian War Memorial records him as Private G. H. Hatton, service number 3352, 11th Australian Infantry Battalion, with a recommendation for the Military Medal.
His Military Medal was awarded for bravery at the Hindenburg Line near Bullecourt, France, on 5–6 May 1917. During three enemy counterattacks, Hatton carried messages from the front line to Battalion Headquarters under heavy shell fire, volunteered for repeated journeys, and assisted stretcher-bearers in carrying out the wounded. The recommendation noted that his conduct had an excellent effect on his comrades.
