PJ2 Trio: 1914-15 Star, British War & Victory Medals Private James McDonald, 1989, 11th Battalion, A.I.F.
James McDonald was born in Fife, Scotland, and was working as a fitter when he enlisted at Geraldton, Western Australia, on 17 February 1915, aged 34. He joined the 3rd Reinforcements, 11th Battalion, A.I.F., and embarked for overseas service on 26 April 1915.
McDonald reached Gallipoli and was taken on strength with the 11th Battalion on 16 June 1915. invalided to England in August 1915.
After recovering, McDonald rejoined the 11th Battalion in France on 30 July 1916 and was later attached to a Light Trench Mortar Battery. On 1 November 1916, while serving on the Western Front, he was wounded in action, receiving a gunshot wound to the left thigh. He was evacuated to England for treatment and, after further medical review, returned to Australia in July 1917.
