After reaching Egypt, Warrington was transferred into the newly formed 51st Battalion, a predominantly Western Australian unit raised in Egypt in March 1916 as part of the expansion of the A.I.F. He proceeded to France and saw active service on the Western Front, where his record shows he was wounded in action, including a gunshot wound to the left forearm in August 1916. He recovered in England, returned to duty, and was again wounded in France in 1917.
