PJ6 Single: Military Medal to 5200 Private John Leonard Slavin, M.M., 11th Battalion, A.I.F. Killed in Action.
Slavin joined the 11th Battalion in France in August 1916 and served through heavy fighting on the Western Front, including the actions around Mouquet Farm, Ligny-Thilloy and Louverval. His Military Medal was awarded for conspicuous bravery at Louverval, France, on 15/16 April 1917, where he carried messages from exposed picquet posts to Company Headquarters through a fire-swept zone, and on return journeys carried ammunition forward, helping the post hold out against the enemy.
Only weeks later, on 6 May 1917, Slavin was killed in action near Bullecourt / Noreuil during heavy German attacks on the 11th Battalion’s line. His body was not recovered, and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
