A Selection of 9 KINGS COLONIAL INSIGNIA. A very fine carded display of unissued examples. All with original Gilt. This collection of badges comes from the original J.R. Gaunt and Son Ltd. Pattern book archive and was originally sold in the UK by the National Army Museum.
This is only the second time in 35 years I have offered a series of these badges with a good gilt finish. Discussions with various serious badge collectors indicate that the splendour of the K.C. uniforms is that there is every chance that all ranks may have worn Gilt badges.
A unique opportunity to obtain guaranteed original badges, complete with lugs.

A superb example of the extremely rare Regency period Officers Shako of the 17th Light Dragoons pattern 1812. See plate 19 “Head dresses of the British Army” – Cavalry by W. Y. Carman (pictured above).
The condition of this helmet is outstanding and possibly never worn. The Regiment history states “1812 .. the old helmet disappeared and the felt shako took its place”. After service in India from 1808 having landed in Calcutta with 790 strong, the regiment lost through disease, invalided and killed in action 26 Officers and 796 men but received numerous reinforcements during this period. It returned home with no less than 200 all ranks. On arriving in St. Helena in 1823 they learnt for the first time that they had been redesignated as a Lancer Regiment. It is also recorded that “the shako was discarded forever and a lance cap of the more orthodox shape introduced in its place”.
Close examination of this helmet shows almost no wear with even the complete chin strap in perfect condition. The maker’s placement of a Coat of Arms indicates a Scottish maker as the main Lion and Unicorn are reversed with first and fourth quarter of the shield depicting the Lion rampant of Scotland.
Being over 200 years old, Shakos of this quality virtually never survive. A truly magnificent example to an extremely popular regiment.

A very nicely executed HM Silver Birmingham 1911 Horses Hoof ink well. It is in the style of the 19th century Horse Hoof mounted inkwell’s which were often removed from deceased horses as proof of death and not stolen or sold off. Horseshoe pattern lid and complete with glass ink well insert. approx. 9 cm.
Very good condition. sold
A very rare 1796 Heavy Cavalry Troopers Sword. Often referred to as the “DISC HILT”. This one is very true to pattern still having its langets and full disc hilt. It also has the hatchet point making it as complete a representative you could hope to find. The back of the blade and disc are marked with a capital R with underscored D (Registered?). Pure speculation on my part but could this make it one of the first made during the period of registering original designs? There are two chop marks in the blade which have been nicely welded and are visible in the photo. The heavy dent free scabbard is unmarked. This pattern sword is very rare and difficult to find.
Some staining to blade otherwise very good condition. Sold
A very rare 1814 Household Cavalry Sword. No maker mark which is common with this sword. Good wire bound fish skin grip. Retains its small quillon. Only odd traces of original gilt showing but complete with scabbard and fish skin inserts.
Blade 34.5 inches.
$11,000
A very Rare and interesting British Sword by Woolley & Sargant. Following Waterloo a great number of 1796 Light Cavalry swords were available for re-hilting. This sword takes on the appearance of the 1896 Mountain Artillery Sword with ultra-rare steel (NOT brass) hilt as used by British not Indian troops. But I can’t help but feel it is much earlier as the family who sold it stated the family legend said it was used in the Battle of Pinjarra Western Australia 1834.
Handle and hilt are steel, even pitting all over, one langet missing or has been purposely removed. Blade showing light pitting and has been converted to spear point. Complete with Steel scabbard. Blade length 29 1/2 inches. Total overall length 35 inches.
Overall quite good condition $1850
Very Good condition and very rare $2750
A very rare Elcho bayonet by Gustav Felix. True to pattern but missing bottom scabbard mount and spring catch. Probably the rarest of all British bayonets, this honest example is the first I have had in 40 years. Interestingly the largest bayonet collector I know’ s examples all have the bottom scabbard mount missing.
