Early Vietnam 1966 KIA Valour Grouping to James Mitchell Cornett

No 25367148 Private First Class James Mitchell Cornett was born on May 10, 1943, and was originally from Elizabethton, Tennessee. He served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Army, as an Infantryman in Alpha Company 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, His tour began on September 25, 1965. Nearly 6 months later, on March 24, 1966, PFC Cornett was killed under hostile conditions in Binh Duong province, South Vietnam; he was 22 years old at the time of his death. PFC Cornett is memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 6E, Line 46

The grouping consists of the following;

Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Vietnam campaign medals, name tag and Infantry Combat badge.

Official Award Documents for both Bronze Star and his Purple Heart in official padded booklet.

Various original cloth patches including Airborne patches (One article states that he transferred to the 173rd Airborne”

Military I.D. and many original photographs in Vietnam

Basic training book from 1962

1965 original Discharge paper where he transferred to the reserves.

Numerous newspaper clippings including one of his parents receiving the Bronze Star.

Over 50 letters to him from family and several from him to them where he describes “loosing men like they are going out of style” along with killing two V.C.

A letter from the White House and several letters from his Congressman.

An amazing collection showing the complete story one man’s heroic life from enlistment until his death in Vietnam.

A good example East Surrey Regiment Officer’s Helmet Plate, 1904-14 pattern, with a gilt Edwardian crowned star mounted with a Garter and laurel sprays bearing a silver regimental title scroll ‘The East Surrey Regt’, with a black velvet centre with a silver eight-pointed star mounted with the arms of the town of Guildford, the reverse with three lugs, 

minor Verdigris to the central area of the crown, otherwise very good condition $350

Phillip Sydney Keen enlisted in the Civil Service Rifles 15th London Regiment as a private number 4373 (later 531823) on the 16th August 1915

Ireland; May 1916

France; June - November 1916

Wounded in action left knee 12th August 1916

Salonika/Macedonia; December 1916 – June 1917

Egypt; June - July 1917

Palestine; July – October 1917

Belgium; November 1917 – March 1919

During this time Phillip Keen is commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on the 8th March 1918 serving with the 3/13 London Regiment (Kensington’s) and then with the 1 /2 London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers)

France; March – October 1919 during this time he served with the 3/16 London Regiment (Queens Westrs)

Due to his fluent Italian in-between the war he was employed by the government as a translator in the Italian section clearing offices.

WW2 Service

Resigned for the Second World War on the 24th of June 1940 and appointed a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Devon Regiment.

Posted to the 7th Battalion D. C. L. I. (later the 30th Bn) in October 1940 and shortly after promoted to Lieutenant.

20th April 1942 promoted to the position of Battalion adjutant as an Acting Captain departing overseas with the 1st Army in December 1942

Made temporary Major and appointed Camp Commandant of Allied Forces Headquarters Battalion 28th October 1943

M.B.E. London Gazette 1st January 1944

Temporary L/Colonel 15th September1945

Disembarked UK 19th January 1947

Fantastic group spanning both World Wars showing Phillip Keen enlisting as a private in the Infantry and ending up a Lieutenant Colonel.
